Avoid like the plague!
This review is from: Philips PET7402/37 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player with Car Mount, Black (Electronics)
Great for keeping the kids occupied on a long trip. If you have a tall spouse, just make sure that the monitors are out of kicking range for the younger kids.
Pros:
1. Great picture.
2. Good price for a dual headed unit.
3. Obviously - entertains the kids!
4. Audio out, if your car has an aux in, you can plug this in and get the sounds from the car speakers (if you really want to hear the kids movies).
Cons:
1. No storage bag to prevent the displays/units from getting scratched.
2. Controls are on the "main" unit and if you don't have an older child capable of running the system, you'll have to remove to change movies and start the next one.
<EDIT>
After the second use these units stopped functioning. Just stopped spinning up the disc and says Phillips Loading. Naturally this was discovered as we're 30 minutes into a 4.5 hour road trip. 10-15 days for a replacement doesn't fix it. Rest of the trip I heard, "Daddy fix it."
<EDIT-2 9/21/09>
After waithing three weeks, I called in to check on the status, and they never generated the request to send the replacement! Now they are telling me 3-4 weeks on top of the many weeks I already haven't had it. If I could change the rating to 1 star, that still wouldn't be high enough.
<EDIT-3 10/8/09>
Adding insult to injury... the replacement was received, much quicker than stated. Kudos. However, they sent an older model, which has even worse reviews than this current model. AND... since it is a refurb, it only has a 90 day warranty. This isn't a product you use frequently, and I probably won't know that it has failed till we sit in the car for the next long trip.
<EDIT-4 10/14/09>
I contacted Philips about the older model being received, and received a friendly CSR, Dwayne. He totally agreed with me, and did everything in his power to get the issue resolved, and escalated up the tiers. I received a call back and they said that this is their policy to replace with a similar model. I informed the supervisor that this is a cheaper model, my unit failed after one use and this was completely unacceptable. It would be no different than buying the more expensive model and being happy with being sent a used cheaper model, she agreed, but could do nothing. I asked again to be escalated. No call back at this point.
Again Amazon's customer service has stepped up to the plate. I contacted Amazon, and they OVERNIGHTED me the same model I originally purchased and included a free return shipping label. I had a product/warranty issue in the past with an elliptical, and they sent a shipping company to pick up the unit in pieces!
I'd still not purchase this model if I were you!

great for what they are for
This review is from: Philips PET7402/37 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player with Car Mount, Black (Electronics)
dual screens for 2 kids... no need for them to crane their necks to a central spot with viewing angle issues.
they are lightweight, cheap feeling plastic units. the displays are acceptable and kids will not notice their relatively poor quality - my portable panasonic dvd player's display is much better! sound is sort of tinny. due to the streamlined design, some of the controls are hard to use and i can foresee kids having a little trouble with them. once setup though, only things to adjust are probably the direction/play buttons on the face of the main unit, volume controls and on/off switches.
they use a belt clip that just loops around the headrest and are lengthy enough to get around my honda pilot's headrests. simple and effective.
it comes with a regular plug-in power that can be used for the main unit but, not the 2nd unit. the car plug-in power cable, which is very long, splits to power both units. a single 1/8" plug A/V cable connects the two units. it also came with a 1/8" inch plug to a split yellow (video), and red/white (stereo sound) cable adapter. you could use it to connect your main unit to another tv if you want. both units have headphone jacks which i did not test yet. only the main unit has a flip out stand (as shown in the picture) so that you can watch it on a table.
so basically, this is "cheap and cheerful." i give it four stars because for the price, it is a very nice unit. easy to setup and install, and it works fine.
i hope it lasts...

Excelent product for the money - but missing a few features
This review is from: Philips PET7402/37 7-Inch Dual Screen Portable DVD Player with Car Mount, Black (Electronics)
We installed the player unit for our (currently) only child, 2 years old, and it immediately made car rides more enjoyable. Setting it up and installing it was easy and quick. Image quality was excelent, audio not superb, but perfectly acceptable (Star Wars won't be that great, but Sesame Street is fine).
My only complaint so far, and it hasn't been a problem yet, is the relatively short (6') cable that connects the player unit to the secondary display. If you're hoping to hide the cabling along the side of the seat, or even inside the seat, that probably won't be enough. The other problem is that there's no internal power, and no way to power it other than home or a vehicle (meaning, it isn't useful on an airplane, unless you manage to get a seat with a power jack). Highly Recommended item!!! - Beats custom car entertainment system
This review is from: Philips PD7016/37 7-Inch Portable LCD Dual DVD Player (Electronics)
This Dvd Portable player is a pleasant suprise.... it is the best product one can have in a vehicle. I know because I have gone through two Dvd Players previously and thinking of custom made entertainment center until now. This Dual Dvd Player can actually play TWO DIFFERENT DVDS ON 2 SCREENS AT THE SAME TIME (my 5 year old girl and 4 year old boy have settled the feud on who watches Barbie and Iron Man....like, forever);or if wanted IT CAN PLAY ONE DVD ON TWO SCREENS AT THE SAME TIME (by hooking the wire to each other). Mind you this is Philips PD 7016 which came into the market barely few months ago.......and not PD7012 ( I almost got the wrong one during my selection). The volume is extraordinarily loud such that the FM Car Transmitter I ordered intending to connect the Dvd speakers to the Car Stereo is of no use to me....because the little speakers on the superd players are whoopers! It starts playing from where it stopped, even after you must have turned it off for an entire day. No matter how bumpy the ride is, the player does not skip a track. Above all, I like classy looking things and this is one classy looking thing inside the car....(check it from the rear of the vehicle). The wires are well placed beside the chairs in my vehicle and is not at all flying over the place; hardly visible at all. I and my spouse were previously thinking of returning our vehicle for custom installation of entertainment system until I saw this product on Wal-mart site. At first I thought it was cheap at 129.00; until a week later the price jumped to 135.00. I reluctantly bought it after the reading the 5 Star reviews.... I was shocked at the superior quality of the product; my entire family fell for the sleek looks and superior performance after I installed it and have been operating it effortlessly. And the reviews (check other sites for more reviews) have been coming such that today as I write this review, the price has jumped to 170.00 on Amazon and other sites. It is highly recommended, grab it while you can. Our family friends have got some already as the price keeps climbing up.....it is worth every dollar. You will attest to this too.

Very adequate
This review is from: Philips PD7016/37 7-Inch Portable LCD Dual DVD Player (Electronics)
Just purchased this for installing in a new van which has no entertainment system. With these kinds of players and screens, there is always going to be a preponderance of wires, so keep that in mind. If you don't care about all the wires hanging about the place, this is truly a neat product. DVD-playing capability is normal, nothing to distinguish from other players. What I really like is the presence of a 3.5mm AV in/out socket that allows other inputs into the players. This works excellent for me because if I want to watch something from my Internet-enabled phone (which has a 3.5mm AV out socket,) then I get to watch it on the 7" screen instead of the tiny phone screen. Extremely cool!

Sanity in a Box.....
This review is from: Philips PD7016/37 7-Inch Portable LCD Dual DVD Player (Electronics)
This is a very nicely designed product. Appearance of the case is top shelf. The video and audio quality is VERY good even on the 'remote' or slave display and the viewing angle is wide enough that it is easy to see from the middle seat.
Despite some of the Philips documentation mentioning to do some features with the 'remote control', the product does not come with one nor have I found one available to purchase as an accessory.
The product is fully featured and does all the things you would expect it to. You can even adjust the brightness on each display from dim-med-bright. HOWEVER- when you attempt to adjust the brightness on the 'slave' unit, it displays that this is "not available". And it seems to default the slave unit to 'dim'. BUT- if you take it out of slave mode, set the brightness and then put it back in slave mode it will keep your brightness setting. Not fatal, but one wonders why they did that.....
The headrest straps route through 2 metal pins embedded in the rear of each display. You run the strap through these, around your headrest (raised a couple of inches so the strap makes contact with the metal rods that support the headrest), and then clasped together. The mounting is very solid and you can tighten it so the display is held firmly against the seat.
The shipment came with:
2- players.
2- A/C adapters
1- Car adapter with 2 cables that come straight from the plug. Not a single cable that Y's off after several feet. Not sure I like this from a cable mess perspective.
1- slave video/audio cable
1- video cable
2- headrest straps
Thus far I am pleased. Now comes the longevity test.
UPDATED 6-6-2011- My 21 month old twins don't ride in the car well after about 30 minutes without nearly constant attention from the front seat passenger (Mom). Recently we had to travel an hour each way to an event and it was the quietest 2 hours on record for the twins. LOVE it so far for that.
I also love how it remembers where your place in the program and starts back at that spot. Also, it auto-replays so when you reach the end of the DVD, it starts over. With no remote control and no way to see the controls from the front seat this is ideal.
I do wish I could downgrade my rating to 4 stars: buttons on the top of the unit would have been preferable to under the screen in the front (where they can be reached by toes). If you are not fluent with the position of the front panel keys, if you are in the front seat, you have to detach the unit so you can operate the buttons.
